Channel 4 announces its presenting team for the night of the upcoming general election.

Channel 4 has become the first broadcaster to announce its presenting team for the night of the upcoming general election.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is believed to be targeting October as the date to go to the polls, but in recent weeks there has been growing speculation that he could call the election as soon as July.

Channel 4's coverage of the results night will be anchored by the broadcaster's long-standing news presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy alongside former Newsnight host Emily Maitlis.

Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart - hosts of the The Rest is Politics podcast - will "bring their own inimitable analysis across the night", while Cathy Newman will be live from the Labour and Conservative campaign HQs and Clare Balding will provide analysis as the results come in.

"I'm so looking forward to joining this brilliant lineup of people to capture an exciting and historic night," said Guru-Murthy.

"We will have piercing analysis, sharp interviews and all those memorable moments as the results come in. I think this is going to be one of those rare election nights we remember for decades so I hope viewers will enjoy spending it with us."

The night will also feature pre-recorded segments from the Gogglebox regulars reacting to the election campaign videos.
