Prue Leith: 'Great British Bake Off impossible at the moment'

Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith concedes that it is "impossible" to film a new season of the show in the current environment.

Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith has admitted that filming a new season of the show is "impossible" at the moment.

The Channel 4 series was due to start filming its new run last month but production was brought to an abrupt halt due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This evening Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to outline a roadmap for a slight easing of the current lockdown measures and Leith is hopeful that his address may provide some route for Bake Off to resume production.

Asked if the show can realistically return this year, Leith told The Andrew Marr Show: "I really hope so, everybody's hoping so, but we're all waiting for Boris to tell us what we're allowed to do and what we're not allowed to do.

"Certainly it's impossible at the moment because there are really a lot of people on set, but I'm sure they'll find a way as soon as they can."

On whether she would still be a part of the show if it does return, the 80-year-old added: "Absolutely, I'd be very upset if somebody kicked me off. Last year I did Junior Bake Off and senior Bake Off. Whether or not I'd be able to do both this time I just don't think there's enough time in the year."

Bake Off is the signature show in Channel 4's autumn schedules, last year drawing almost 10 million viewers.
